Origins of the Sheepadoodle

Sheepadoodle is a relatively young breed compared to some other breeds, hybrids and purebreds alike.

Designer dogs are generally said to have started appearing in the 1980s, with owners favoring the non-shedding characteristics of breeds like the Poodle and began blending them with other favorite kinds of dogs.

Sheepadoodles are one such combination. They come from a merger of the Standard Poodle (originating somewhere near the 1500s), which has a rich history of being a hunting dog in Germany.

They were also extremely popular as glamor pets, namely for the women of the upper-class. This was predominantly due to the Poodle’s small size, which made carrying them around quite easy.

Poodles are one of the more prevalent species of “crossbreeding experimenting,” because of their many favorable traits.

The other half of the equation, the Old English Sheepdog rose in popularity on the farmsteads of England in the 1800s.

Farmers would use these strong, commanding, highly-intelligent dogs to herd sheep (which is where they get their namesake), but to also control the other animals that were on the farm.

What the breeders hoped to accomplish was retain the high levels of intelligence and the activeness of the sheepdog, but combine it with the family-friendly and low-shedding qualities of the Poodle. Thus, the sheepadoodle was born.

Sheepadoodle Pedigree

Since the sheepadoodle is a hybrid/cross-breed, it doesn’t qualify for the American Kennel Club’s (AKC) roster of purebreds.

The parenting breeds, however, are long-time members with stunning distinctions.

The Old English Sheepdog was first admitted to the “herding group” back in 1888; it is described as being “adaptable, gentle, and smart.”

On the other hand, the Poodle first joined the “sporting group” back in 1887 and is described as being “very smart, proud, and active.”

The sheepadoodle is fortunate to come from such two strong bloodlines and all the fortunes of such heritage show in a number of its qualities.

Moreover, while they aren’t allowed into the AKC, they are in the following organizations: Dog Registry of America (DRA), American Canine Hybrid Club (ACHC), and the International Designer Canine Registry (IDCR).

Sheepadoodle Temperament

Sheepadoodles are well-known for being playful and incredibly affectionate and are widely considered being ideal family pets.

Generally speaking, they tend to be very calm, patient, social, and obedient. It makes them excellent around toddlers and infants (baby naps are sacred).

This also makes them particularly good at being introduced to other dogs.

Their friendly nature makes them suitable for pet dates and makes traveling and walks – for enjoyment or exercise – all the more possible.

They are highly intelligent dogs, which makes training them in the earlier stages a less stressful and more comfortable than it would be with other breeds, hybrids included.

This training will come in handy with balancing out their more dangerous side.

With something of a high-energy side, they can become a bit boisterous at times.

It indeed isn’t a bad thing (who doesn’t like a happy, excited dog?), but it can cause problems if you live in an apartment that values quiet animal companions.

Early training is undoubtedly beneficial for this particular breed.

It should be noted that being social, leaving this breed alone for days at a time isn’t a good idea (i.e., going on vacation).

It would be wiser make a reservation at a pet hotel or foster them out to a close friend or family member if you go out of town for an extended period.

Full grown Sheepadoodle

While sheepadoodles are relatively large dogs, you don’t have to worry about moving out of your apartment for them or finding a new house.

If you’re in an apartment with strict weight and height sizes, you might be pushing it, but you can make it work.

The standard sheepadoodle usually matures into a medium or large dog.

On average, they can come in anywhere from 45 to 80 pounds (18 – 30 Kg) and stand at anywhere from 13 to 27 inches (56 to 66 cm). Keep in mind that these are averages.

In some cases, if a sheepadoodle is coming from large parents, they can fully mature into dogs that are much bigger.

While it will never be anything close to breeds like the St. Bernard, it is something to keep in mind.

If you live in a facility with strict weight and height standards, a standard sheepadoodle may not be the best breed of dog for you.

It would be wise to look over your residence’s limitations and then get accurate measurements of your pet before completing the purchase.

While you might want a sheepadoodle more than anything, it is necessary for you to provide a welcoming and healthy environment for the dog to live.

It includes a generous living space, where they won’t feel constricted or “locked in.”

There are mini sheepadoodles available, however, and possess all of the glorious beauty of the standard breed but just in a smaller package (which was credited to their sharp rise in demand).

These pets can be much smaller and a reliable alternative to the stand sheepadoodle.

Lifespan of Sheepadoodle

Sheepadoodles tend to live for an average of 12 years. However, some dogs have been recorded as living as long as 15 years.

That’s plenty of time for love and affection between you and your furry friend, and also gives your family plenty of time to enjoy their company, as well.

It can be important for individuals that are just beginning families, or already have young children in the picture.

It will give the kids plenty of time to bond and adore their furry family member.

Appearance Of Sheepdoodle

Sheepadoodles are an undeniably gorgeous breed of dog. They have strong, sturdy builds credited to their Old English Sheepdog heritage.

They are said to have a square, sometimes rounded face with an elongation at the snout. It gives their skull a broad look, making them almost dome-shaped.

One of their signature qualities is their big, low-hanging ears. Their small, expressive eyes are set between medium lengths hair.

It gives them a soft, adorable look that can quickly melt the hearts of possible buyers.

While the cuteness and adorable appearance never waver, it does mature as they age, becoming more elegant and beautiful in a way.

Sheepadoodle mini is a very handsome breed of dogs, and sure to garner compliments wherever you take them.

The most significant variation comes in their coats, which can be anywhere between straight, smooth sheets and fluffy curls.

Sometimes, the fur on the face can cover their eyes so that an occasional trim may be required (you can do this in the comfort of your own home with a small pair of scissors).

They have a variety of colors in their coats, which makes them a favorite among possible buyers. They are born either black, white, or both.

The colors are arranged in well-defined spots that can appear on any part of the body (which gives them a strong resemblance to panda bears, one of the most adorable creatures on the planet!).

No sheepadoodle will have the same spots as another, giving every dog of the breed their unique print.

Other sheepadoodles can come in different color schemes, like white and red, but these tend to cost a great deal more.

There are also some that are entirely brown or gray, but these are notably rare and much harder to find.

They are, without a doubt, the most expensive dogs of the breed you can buy (sometimes costing more than $3,000).

Do Sheepadoodles shed?

Because sheepadoodles tend to have short and curly coats like the Poodle, they don’t shed often (and when they do its minimal).

It is one of the significant attributes that breeders hoped to obtain with the hybrid, in the first place.

So, you won’t have a ridiculous amount of dog hair all over your home, sticking to your sofa, your clothes, or layering over your carpet.

However, even though they don’t shed like some other breeds, they still do have a coat that needs to be taken care of. It means you’re going to have to take care of them from time to time.

To keep the matted fur from forming into clumps, brush your sheepadoodle once or twice a week.

Because of their excellent behavioral skills, this task isn’t nearly as difficult as it might be with a more boisterous dog breed. It will keep any trace shedding to a minimum, and in the end, save you a great deal more time.

You’ll also want to check their ears regularly for wax, and dirt builds up. While this is standard protocol for dog caring, you’ll want to pay special attention to your old english sheepdog poodle mix.

The curly hair around their ear can assist with the build up more quickly and cause infection. It’s recommended that you trim these to help avoid that.

As mentioned earlier, the hair around their eyes might sometimes grow a bit too long (this isn’t the case for every dog of the breed, mind you).

It can impede their vision and also lead to infection, as their hair might get covered in dirt or filth.

To avoid any possible issues, when brushing their coat, make it a habit to check and ensure that their facial hair does not need to be trimmed.

Are Sheepadoodles a Hypoallergenic breed?

For dog owners with any sensitivity to their fur or dandruff, hypoallergenic dogs are a godsend. It allows them to love their favorite pets without getting the stuffies or sniffles.

Thankfully, the vast majority of sheepadoodles are hypoallergenic (above 90% of the breed). However, this does not extend to the entire breed.

There are some pups of the breed out there that are not hypoallergenic and can cause serious issues for their possible owners.

Before purchasing your dog, you’ll need to verify their hypoallergenic status with the breeder/institution that’s holding them.

However, if it isn’t necessary for you, then there’s no issue. The chances of you receiving a hypoallergenic sheepadoodle are far higher than the chances of you receiving one that isn’t.

Feeding Poodle Mix

While you aren’t going to need to buy expensive wet or canned food, a Sheepadoodle’s diet should consist of high-quality kibbles.

old english sheepdog poodle mix

It is just good dog-owner practice (feeding your pup the best food you can afford to give them). Ensuring the quality of their food will help you manage their weight more easily.

Being a particularly active breed, they should be fed anywhere from 2-3 times a day.

Be modest with their portions, as they’re known to lose and gain weight reasonably comfortable.

Find whatever works for you and your dog and go with that; in particular, something that provides them with a stable weight. You want minimal fluctuations in weight gain or loss.

Having a free-flowing food device in the home is ill-advised. Under no circumstances will you ever want this, and if you leave your dog in the care of another, you will want to make sure they are aware of the severity of the situation.

Sheepadoodles are known to lose self-control when it comes to food. They will eat well beyond the point of being full, which can cause them some issues (the most specific of which is bloat).

You’ll want to be in total control of their food cycle, as to maintain a healthy balance for them.

Furthermore, be sure to allow your sheepadoodle some time to rest and relax after eating.

You won’t want to play with them or take out for exercise, as this can quickly lead to developing bloat.

Do Dogs need many exercises?

Exercise is essential for any breed of dog. It helps to keep dogs in shape, keeps them engaged, and helps burn off some of that energy that might have been building up while you were away at work. For sheepadoodles, it’s no different.

Being a very active dog breed, it’s essential for them to get the attention and exercise that they need.

It doesn’t mean that you have to strap on your shoes and run a mile with your dog, but you will need to spend a little bit of time with them. Taking them outside at least once a day is highly encouraged.

If you own a home and have a modest sized backyard, you’re good to go. Just let them wander around, stretch their legs, or have them run around for ten minutes or so.

If you’re in an apartment, giving them a little longer walk when you take them outside to use the bathroom should suffice (and should be more than convenient for you).

The important thing is to keep your sheepadoodle stimulated and engaged, using whatever means works best for both of you.

While they are known for being calm and relaxed, they do have an energetic side, and failing to give them their needed attention can lead to issue further down the road.

Sheepadoodle health issues?

Generally speaking, the Sheepadoodle is a healthy and robust dog since it comes from two different purebred bloodlines.

There aren’t many issues indicative of the breed, as they have what is known as ‘hybrid vigor.’ It means that, due to the benefits of crossbreeding, they tend to have fewer health issues than their parents.

Many hybrids are like this, which is why the process has become as popular as it is today.

However, sheepadoodles are not exempt from possibly inheriting issues from their parents through their genetics.

Some of the more common health problems are skin cancers, joint aches and pains, renal disorders, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, crushings or Addison’s disease, and bloat.

Every dog is different, and to get a better understanding of the health challenges your specific pooch might endure; you’ll need to ask the breeder you obtain them from.

They’ll likely be able to give you a more detailed report of your dog’s parents and their medical history.

More often than not, though, you’re likely to get a perfectly healthy dog that will be with you for years to come.

How much does a Sheepadoodle cost?

Because of their continued rising popularity, sheepadoodle breeders can be found almost anywhere in the world.

They’ve gained a much stronger presence online, and you can easily find a breeder near you through a variety of dog purchasing websites.

However, by no means are these dogs inexpensive or cheap.

Designer dogs can fetch a pretty price, especially those with unique patterns, eye colors, and other factors you may be looking for.

Some sheepadoodle puppies can cost anywhere between $1,000 and $3,000.

They are a significant investment, and you should only purchase one at this price if you’re going to commit to this dog’s life. Here is a small list of recent prices.

  • Micro Sheepadoodle Puppies: $2200.00
  • Silver Sheepadoodle Puppies: $1800.00
  • Mini Tri-Color Sheepadoodle Puppies: $2200.00
  • Small Standard Sheepadoodle Puppies: $1500.00
  • Standard Sheepadoodle Tri-Color Puppies $1800.00

As you can see from these randomly selected prices, you aren’t going to find a sheepadoodle for anywhere under $1,000. Top quality dogs tend to fetch a top-quality price.

How to adopt from a shelter or rescue?

Alternatively, you could choose to adopt a sheepadoodle. While there aren’t any specific rescue organizations dedicated to this breed, there are many Sheepdog rescues in the United States.

You can find a comprehensive list of these agencies on Petfinder.com, which will help you locate them based on name, location, and locate the closest shelter/rescue to your residence.

You may have to negotiate travel fees (if the shelter is far away), but it will likely cost much less than buying from a registered breeder.

Adopting can cost within the range of $75 and $200, with adoption fees included. Additional charges may apply.

Whichever you choose, ensure that you’re purchasing or adopting from a responsible, reputable, and legal organization.

You want to make sure that your money is going to the right place and that it will be used for the right reasons.

The Final Verdict: To Buy or Not To Buy?

Sheepadoodles are quickly gaining a name for themselves as a family dog, and there are lots of reasons for that.

From their gorgeous appearance to their stellar personality, they’re the ideal candidate for a family environment, especially where infants and toddlers might be present (having a pet that won’t interfere with your child’s routine is always critical).

Having a calm, sociable, and respectful demeanor which makes them perfect for going on walks and being introduced to other dogs – and people – is also an incredible boon for the breed.

It makes socializing for the owner a great deal easier, which may not be the case with some other breeds (there’s nothing wrong with a dog that isn’t the most outgoing, but for some owners, that might not mesh well with their lifestyle).

Sheepadoodles are incredibly expressive, which means that you’ll never come home to a dull welcoming.

They have huge hearts full of love and affection, and all they want is to shower you in it.

Which is one of the best parts of being a dog owner, right? This makes them exceptional companies, perfect for company and snuggling.

If you’re looking for an obedient, intelligent, and the practical dog then look no further. So long as you can provide the sheepadoodle with the exercise and attention it needs, and of course, a forever home, then this dog should certainly be near the top of your list – especially if you’re thinking about starting a family or just recently have.

  1. My husband and I want to get a dog, but we don’t know what breed we want! I didn’t know sheepadoodles don’t shed a lot, but you still need to take for their coats with brushing and trimming. I’ll have to keep that in mind and I’ll ask the breeder we get our pup from for shampoo references, thanks to this post.

    • Thanks for the most informative info. We have just recently purchased a beautiful puppy and are loving every minute with her.
She has added a spark to our everyday activities and is definitely the most lovable pet imaginable, even though I do have allergies she has not given me any problems.
We are a retired couple in our late 70’s and early 80’s and she has brought so much love and is keeping us active and fulfilled.
