Cairn terrier dogs is one of the oldest terrier breeds. They are originated in the Scotland. Cairn terrier dogs are working dog breeds. They are named as ‘Cairn’ because their function is to chase and hunt quarry between cairns.
The dog type is ratters. Average life span of this Cairn terrier is ranged in between 12 – 17 years. According to the breed’s history Cairn Terrier dogs are originated in Scotland Highlands and Isle of Skye.
At their initial breed they are grouped in to the Skye terrier including West Highland White Terriers and Scottish. These three breeds were started to breed separately at early 1900s.
Cairn Terrier Dogs Breed Characteristics:
These Cairn terrier dogs are looking so cute. Their average weight is ranged in between 4.5 – 6.8 kg. The average weight of the terrier ranged in between the 22 – 33 cm. they are quite small dog breeds. These cairn terriers have very hard and highly weather resistant outer coat.
The coat color can be varied when we think about two different Cairn terrier. They have abundant shaggy outer coat and soft downy undercoat. The outer coat may show various different colors including sandy, black, wheaten, cream, red, brindle or gray.
Brindle coated Cairn Terriers can be changed their color throughout the lifetime. This is a specific characteristic of Crain Terriers. So that they can become more black or silver progressively when they become older.
This is a common feature among Terriers who has brindled outer coat. Cairn Terrier dogs are double coated dog breeds which contain dense and soft undercoat and hard outer coat.
Cairn Terrier Dogs Breed Colors
These Terrier dogs are shed very small amount. After one grooming can destroy the dog’s hard outer coat by using shears and scissors. Removing the old dead hairs allow new hairs to come out. This may want to do in a correct manner. If not so the dog can be caused uncomfortable.
The new hair growth may involve protecting the Terriers from dirt, dust and water. Their wire coat may keep dog dry in a watery climate by repelling water. Clipper cutting can be damage to their unique wire coat. These newly growth hairs make dog healthy.
These Cairn Terrie dogs are faced many health problems. Most diseases are identified as specific to Terriers. Some diseases are heritable. Other diseases are occurred due to the non specific factors including injuries, toxins, advanced aged, infections, etc. During breed they get more try to reduce the hereditary health issues. These hereditary diseases including,
- Hip dysplasia – It is a common disease among dogs. This means the abnormal formation of the hip socket. This cause painful arthritis in joints.
- Corneal dystrophy – This is an age related change that affects the inner layer of the corneal. Requires surgical intervention to cure.
- Cataract – This result to decrease the vision due to the clouding of the eye lens. It can be affecting either one or both eyes. This disease grows in slowly.
- Entropion – This is a disease that cause lower eyelid (usually) folds inward. This is cause due to the genetic factors and it is very uncomfortable.
- Craniomandibular osteopathy – This disease also named as lion’s jaw. This cause the extensive bony change in the skull and mandible. 3 to 8 months age dog breeds are affected by this disease. For large dog breeds this is a rare disease.
And also Ocular Melanosis, Hypothyroidism, Krabbe disease, luxating patella, Soft Tissue Sarcoma, etc are the other diseases that Cairn terrier may face.
Cairn terriers Dogs are the cute family dogs that require sufficient exercise to maintain good health. They are generally stubborn dog breeds. These Terrirs are obedient and intelligent dog type. They are very active dog breeds. Cairn Terries require daily walk for their good health.
Since their puppy time to adult we have to provide very healthy and appreciable foods and beverages for the Cairn terrier dogs. According to the changes in their age we have to alter the way of supplying foods and the type of foods. The quality of the foods is a very important factor because it is really need to maintain the better healthy on Cairn terrier dogs. During their puppy time period milk is very important beverage because at that period their teeth is not grown well and they are unable to cutting and chewing foods. Vaccination also very influential to maintain the health of the Cairn Terrier dogs. According to their age ranges medically recommended drugs and vaccines must have to be given.
